Jennifer, Bill Higginson lists "toad" as a summer kigo. By some definitions (not mine) the presence of a kigo in and of itself is what makes a haiku a haiku. Here, if you emphasize the human presence, you can argue that this is senryu. If, on the other hand, the look of the toad, its appearance of pondering, is emphasized, then it looks more like haiku. And if we regard the poem as balanced between the two . . . ? I confess that I am pleased to find myself often working along the blurred boundary that doesn't really separate haiku from senryu.
