funny, my reaction was "sad" :-(, but I see the smiley face in the response above!

I, too, read this as sad, but I think I can explain Vaughn's reaction. He's Canadian, as I am, and gay weddings are no big deal here. So perhaps Vaughn saw this as humourous, kind of like a father anxious to get rid of a dependent. Just a guess.

Speak up, Vaughn! Explain yourself!

Actually, I was hoping for an emotionally complex response to this one. There is definitely something flippant about the wording (re-imagine it in the first person) in tension with the pathos of the situation. There's also the "last laugh" issue--if anybody's laughing.

So, thanks to all three.

Gay weddings are the norm pretty much in Britain, so I wasn't sure how to react, except maybe his dad is now gay too?
