When I first got my hands on Carole MacRury's book, In The Company of Crows: HAIKU and TANKA Between the Tides, I knew it was going to be good. Edited by Cathy Drinkwater Better, a skillful editor and poet herself, illustrated by one of the best sumi-e painters, Ian Condescu, and generously filled with tanka and haiku by one of my favourite poets, what was not to like?
The book appealed to me because Carole is a sharp, vivid writer, with clear, concise lines and imagery. The emotions in her tanka are tautly expressed. However, the book appealed to me on another level. As a Canadian who lives her life on both sides of the border, as does Carole MacRury, there was plenty to speak to me as well.
I get a lot of email from people asking me what tanka and haiku are, and how to write it. Besides directing them to articles on the form, I also direct them to books. This will be one of them.
The book is available directly from the author for $18.00 in US funds. Send cash, check, or money order, made payable to “Carole MacRury,” to: In the Company of Crows, c/o Carole MacRury, 1636 Edwards Drive, Point Roberts, WA 98281 USA.
